What next?

I am house-sitting right now, so my highly refined routine has been upset.

However, yesterday I hit a MAJOR jackpot- found lots and lots of gross, beat-up, falling-apart old magazines (just the kind I like!) as well as some really great vintage photographs.

Everything is from the 20s-60s, perfect for some new jewelry and art- can't wait to get started! Until then, take a peak at these fun items from my shop...

My latest project!

I find this new collage highly ironic. I collect old books and somewhere along the way I obtained this  discarded Los Angeles Unified School District textbook:

 (copyright 1935, printed 1959, used until 1988).

How do I explain what the LAUSD means to me? Well, it attempted to educate me, employed my mother, and now- after some freelance teaching with them- I have been "hired" for their after school arts program. I say "hired" because this semester has consisted solely of filling out paperwork- not a cute little kid in sight.
How I miss this.
So there is something a bit therapeutic in ripping out pages of a textbook from this esteemed organization. I started with some wood blocks that I painted black.

Then I decoupaged some really fun images onto the blocks- a great "map" and quotes by famous poets which reference Greek myths. To give credited where due, this textbook is pretty awesome. It is full of info, illustrations, and I especially like the links with other authors. I even found myself taking a few of the tests and quizzes...
Hint: "skald" means poet.
Anyway, this is how it turned out!

(Why did she have to figure out how to post pictures??)

The beginning...

Brand new blog from a brand new blogger. Awkward.

I shall attempt to document the adventures of my new "business" (more on that in a second), though a few items of a personal nature may slip in. So may a few links to Carol Channing youtube videos. Hey, everyone procrastinates in their own special way.

A bit of background: This was a very difficult year for me- among other things I lost my job of 5 years that meant the world to me. So, with a little inspiration from my crazy uncle Al in Oregon, I decided to open a store on Etsy and try to make some cash while I figure out what the heck to do with my life. On my store I primarily have jewelry, some collage artwork, and vintage playbills.

My close friends and family will understand the excess playbills (an obsession) but the fact that I am doing anything artsy is a shock to both them and me. Up until the Summer of 2010, I had no inclinations toward anything involving "crafts," and I will never ever ever consider myself an artist. I couldn't draw a proper stick figure if my life depended on it* but when offered a job as an arts and crafts teacher for 5 and 6 year olds at a swanky summer camp, I decided it was time to dive in. I'm still hooked.

So I have been experimenting with a number of mediums, particularly making jewelry with resin (that is some tricky stuff, let me tell you) and now collage art (fellow crafters: this blog is purely for entertainment purposes, I doubt I will have any actual wisdom to share about my endeavors).

I opened my store about a month ago, even though I am still trying to figure out Etsy culture- navigating treasury lists, shop stats and activity feeds- all while figuring out graphic design and how to take decent quality photos with my phone. The store is definitely still a work in progress, but guess what? Today I made my first sale! I am ecstatic! Will the birth of my first child be this intense? Impossible!

I made a whole $8 today- what will tomorrow bring? Wish me luck!

*This is just an educated guess. I have never, in fact, been in a situation of this nature.
